Hey everybody and welcome to the podcast.
As WordPress Website Design experts we thought it was important to explain a little more about why we choose it over the rest.
In today’s episode, I want to talk about the benefits of WordPress and WooCommerce and why we pick them for a large number of websites that we build, even in the current landscape with everything changing. So let’s dive into some of the main reasons we pick them as a platform for Kiwi businesses we help.
I’ve been in the website business for about 15 to 18 years.Over these years, we’ve seen many platforms come and go. Remember Joomla? And heaps of others that floated around. They’ve come and they’ve gone. But the one thing that I love about WordPress is it sticks around.
WordPress started early on as a content management system designed for blogging. However, over the years, it has evolved significantly to meet users’ needs. It’s now a robust platform for not just blogging but also building general websites and adding e-commerce functionalities, thanks to the continuous improvements and integrations made by plugin developers.
Personally, I think we’ve built at least 200 websites on WordPress. We’ve seen both good times and challenging times with it. The key thing to remember is that no platform is perfect. Whatever platform you choose, there will be challenges. Your platform will get you 90% of the way there, but the last 10% is about compromise, making good decisions, and getting good advice. Sometimes, it’s about letting things go because every platform has its pros and cons.
One of the main reasons I love WordPress is ownership. As a website developer, if I’m building you a website that’s going to last for a long time, I want you to own it. With platforms like Weebly and Wix, you don’t actually own your website. The minute you stop paying for hosting or following their rules, you lose control over your site. You can’t change providers or swap hosts, which means you lose a lot of choices. We often see businesses stuck in this situation and end up rebuilding their websites on WordPress.
Now, some other platforms have their merits. For instance, Shopify is fantastic for very small businesses just starting out in e-commerce. It’s great for testing the market with something simple. We also build larger Shopify websites for clients, especially those with big budgets. However, the costs can quickly add up with Shopify due to additional plugin charges and long-term recurring costs.
With WordPress, you can manage costs better. There are paid plugins, but many essential ones are included in our hosting costs. Plus, you actually own your website. If ownership and cost management are important to you, WordPress is the way to go.
Another significant advantage of WordPress is its SEO-friendliness. Search engines, particularly Google, love WordPress. About 30-40% of the internet is made up of WordPress websites, so Google knows it has to understand how to read them. This makes WordPress a no-brainer for anyone serious about search engine optimisation.
Other open-source platforms usually don’t have the same level of support and community. We’ve seen many challenges with smaller platforms, like Joomla. WordPress, on the other hand, has a massive global community contributing to its development and improvement. It’s here to stay.
Finally, I want to mention the benefits of improved tools, plugins, and themes. We use the Breakdance builder, which has evolved significantly. It allows us to create websites that perform well in Google Tests, a big plus for SEO. We can build fast, efficient WordPress websites, which is crucial for any SEO strategy.
That’s what I wanted to share today. I often get asked what platform to choose, and for us, it’s WordPress and WooCommerce, especially for e-commerce websites. If you want to find out more, get in touch for a free consultation. We’re always happy to discuss your goals and how we can help.
