Quick answer

Start with listings your customers are likely to use. Check your business details, claim existing profiles where appropriate and keep a record of access. Relevant, accurate listings are more useful than collecting links from every directory you can find.

A directory listing should help a customer find the right business and take the next step. It is worth checking where your company already appears before creating more profiles, especially if you have changed your name, phone number or website.

These ten options cover search platforms, New Zealand directories and community discovery. They are a starting list to assess for your business, not a ranking of audience size or a promise of better Google positions. Check each provider’s current eligibility, listing options and pricing before signing up.

## Ten places to check

### 1\. Google Business Profile

[Google Business Profile](https://www.google.com/business/) helps eligible businesses manage their information in Google Search and Maps. Start by checking that the profile represents the real business accurately. Our [seven-step Business Profile guide](/google-places/) explains the practical checks.

### 2\. Yellow NZ

[Yellow](https://yellow.co.nz/) offers a New Zealand business directory with location and service search. Search for your business first, then review whether the existing details and website link are correct before considering a listing or advertising package.

### 3\. Finda

[Finda](https://www.finda.co.nz/) lets visitors search New Zealand businesses by what they need and where they need it. Check that your category describes the work you want enquiries about, and look for outdated or duplicate entries.

### 4\. NoCowboys

[NoCowboys](https://www.nocowboys.co.nz/) combines business discovery with customer ratings, including trades and other services. Review whether your type of customer uses it and what managing a business presence involves.

### 5\. Neighbourly

[Neighbourly](https://www.neighbourly.co.nz/) is a neighbourhood platform with a business area. Treat it as a place to understand and participate in a local community, following its rules. It is a different proposition from a public search directory.

### 6\. Hotfrog NZ

[Hotfrog](https://www.hotfrog.co.nz/) provides business listings with category and location discovery. Check the quality of nearby listings in your sector and whether your business is already represented before adding another entry.

### 7\. New Zealand Small Business Directory

[New Zealand Small Business Directory](https://www.nzsbdirectory.co.nz/) provides a place to discover small businesses. Review its current listing options and whether the audience suits the service or products you sell.

### 8\. Cylex NZ

[Cylex](https://www.cylex.co.nz/) offers local business search and profiles. As with the other directories, accurate contact information and a useful description are the first things to check.

### 9\. Apple Business

[Apple Business](https://business.apple.com/) includes tools for managing how a business appears on Apple Maps and other Apple services. This replaces the older Maps Connect link in our original list. Check the available location and brand options for your business.

### 10\. Bing Places for Business

[Bing Places for Business](https://www.bing.com/forbusiness/) is the place to review your business listing for Bing. Microsoft’s [listing guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/bing/add-and-manage-your-business-listing) explains where to claim or update the information.

## What to prepare before updating listings

Keep one shared record with your business name, phone number, website, address or service area, opening hours and a short description. Record the account owner and when each listing was last checked. Use the same core facts while adapting the description to the directory’s audience.

Check the destination link too. Someone searching for a specific service should land on a page that explains it clearly. A current listing pointing to an old or confusing page is an unfinished job.

## Decide whether a paid listing is worthwhile

Before paying, ask what the package includes, how enquiries are measured and how you can change or cancel it. Look at the relevance of the audience rather than an impressive traffic figure alone.

Track the source of worthwhile enquiries. If a listing sends a few customers who are a good fit, that may matter more than a large number of visits that go nowhere. Review this over a sensible period before increasing the spend.

## Do business directories improve SEO?

Accurate listings can help people discover and verify your business. They are one part of a wider local presence. Google’s [local ranking guidance](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091) describes relevance, distance and prominence; it does not say that adding ten directory entries guarantees a higher position.

If you need a plan beyond updating listings, our [local SEO service](/search-engine-optimisation/) brings the website, service content and local search basics together. Start with the information your customers need, then measure whether it leads to better enquiries.
